Creating an accurate Katana description requires appreciating the word’s origins.
The 8th-century AD Chronicles of Japan (Nihon Shoki) was the first document to show the existence of the term “Katana.” Japan’s second oldest classical history book described the sword as having a one-sided (“kata”) blade (na”). The description differentiates it from another Japanese sword, the “Tsurugi,” which featured a double-sided or double-edged blade.
The iconic Katana curve is more refined or less pronounced than the older saber-like “Tachi.” Its blade extends at least 23.86 inches or 60.6 centimeters from the guard (“tsuba”) to the tip. Handling the Katana is also more secure and stable, thanks to its exceptionally long handle that can accommodate two hands

Ishan Kishan will lead Sunrisers Hyderabad for the opening few matches of IPL 2026, stepping in for Pat Cummins, who is yet to fully recover from a back injury. Abhishek Sharma will serve as Kishan’s deputy during this period.
Sources close to SRH have told Cricbuzz that the arrangement is only temporary, with regular captain Cummins set to resume leadership duties once he regains full fitness. An official announcement is expected shortly.
It is not yet clear how many matches Cummins will miss, but it is understood that the Australia captain will report to the SRH camp on March 23. He is expected to undergo rehabilitation with the franchise in India, and as reported by Cricbuzz yesterday, he could miss the first three matches of the season.
SRH begin their campaign against defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on March 28. Their second fixture is also away, against Kolkata Knight Riders on April 2, before they return home to face Lucknow Super Giants on April 5.
Cummins, 32, has been out of action since December, when he featured in just the one Ashes Test, in Adelaide. A long-standing back injury kept him sidelined before and after that game. He also missed the recently concluded T20 World Cup, but sources within Sunrisers Hyderabad have confirmed to Cricbuzz that he has received clearance from Cricket Australia to honour his IPL contract. However, he is expected to need some time before returning to match action.
Every culture has its own way of greeting a new beginning. In the southern Indian states of Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Karnataka, that greeting comes with the fragrance of mango blossoms, the sound of temple bells, and the unforgettable, complex taste of a dish called Ugadi Pachadi. Ugadi derived from the Sanskrit words Yuga (era) and Adi (beginning) marks the start of the Hindu lunar calendar, celebrated on the first day of the month of Chaitra, which typically falls in March or April. It is not merely a festival; it is a philosophical statement about how life ought to be lived. For millions of people, Ugadi is the most emotionally significant day of the year, a moment that reconnects them to their roots, their faith, and their families.
Ugadi’s roots run deep into Hindu mythology and astronomical tradition. According to legend, it was on this day that Lord Brahma, the creator, began the work of creation setting the universe into motion. The festival thus carries a cosmic significance, representing not just a personal or cultural new year, but the very rhythm of time itself. Some scriptures also associate Ugadi with the day Lord Vishnu took his first avatar, Matsya, marking the beginning of divine intervention in the world.
The astronomical basis of Ugadi is equally compelling. The festival follows the luni-solar calendar, and its date is calculated based on the position of the moon and the sun. The first day of Chaitra, following the new moon (Amavasya), signals the arrival of spring in the Deccan plateau, a season of renewal, blooming flowers, and the promise of a good harvest. This alignment of nature, mythology, and human celebration makes Ugadi one of the most holistically conceived festivals in the Indian calendar. It is a reminder that we are not separate from nature, we are part of its eternal cycle.
The Karnataka State Cricket Association has received official permission from the Government of Karnataka to host matches of the Indian Premier League at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, bringing clarity over the venue status for the upcoming season. The venue will host the opening match of the season – between Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Sunrisers Hyderabad – on March 28.
Over the past few years, I’ve moved away from following primarily recipe blogs to spending my time enjoying other types of lifestyle blogs, and it has been awesome. I have blog categories on Feedly for photographers I admire, cool people working for social justice, interesting perspectives on faith, DIY stuff I actually want to try, you name it! Mostly they’re just blogs that have nothing to do with recipes, and I find that I look forward to reading them more than ever. But that said, the blogs in my reader that get the most clicks by a landslide are in my favorite category that I have oh-so-creatively named — get ready for it — “fun”.
And they are just that — blogs I find fun! Some I have followed for years and years, some are pretty new to me. Some deal with 100% light and fluffy stuff, some dig a little deeper into the meat of life. Some of them share the most beautiful prose, some are random and chatty and full of incomplete sentences. But I love them all, and can genuinely say that I look forward to reading them most mornings (after I read The Skimm, of course, which I’m still obsessed with), and also genuinely admire each of the bloggers behind them. ♥

Cummins has captained SRH in 30 matches and has won 15 games and lost 14, with one ending in a no result. In 2024, he guided the side to the final, where they lost to Kolkata Knight Riders. Last season, SRH finished sixth, managing six wins and seven defeats.
Sources have told Cricbuzz that the SRH management was always clear that Ishan would lead the side in Cummins’ absence, despite intense speculation over the interim captaincy. Both Ishan and Abhishek played key roles in India’s successful T20 World Cup campaign recently, but Ishan, 27, being the senior, has got the nod. He has featured in 119 IPL matches, while the 25-year-old Abhishek has played 77.
